What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a process used to remove minerals and contaminants from water. While many people call it a filtration process, it’s much more complicated than just filtering. Rather than just running water through a filter, such as carbon, reverse osmosis does an even better job at removing total dissolved solids that can be found in tap water. Used in both residential and commercial environments, reverse osmosis is one of the best ways to purify water.

How Reverse Osmosis Systems Work

Reverse osmosis systems separate contaminated water from clean water by a membrane. Under normal circumstances, the water level on the contaminated side will be slightly higher than on the pure water side. However, with reverse osmosis, slight pressure is added to the contaminated side, pushing the water through the membrane, which contaminants cannot pass. The result is purified water free of contaminants like radium, fluoride, chlorine, salts, metals, cysts, and turbidity.
